PRACTICAL MINISTRIES PROGRAM

Southern Methodist College is committed to a balance in training students by providing opportunities for practical ministry as well as academic endeavors.  Recognizing the Biblical emphasis on the local church in the task of world evangelization, Southern Methodist College seeks to place as many students as possible in local churches for service and training.  Christian ministries, as a natural outgrowth of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, should result in the development of the individual's spiritual gifts and a  fruitful ministry to others.

“Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm.  Let nothing move you.  Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” (1 Corinthians l5:58, NIV)

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

1.   All full-time students are required to participate in the Practical Ministries Program.  Students in the first semester of their first year are not required to participate due to the adjustments to college life and the requirements of the personal evangelism course.

2.   Southern Methodist College provides workshops and seminars to equip the students with a foundation for specific ministries. All students involved in a practical ministries program are required to attend any session offered in their specific area of service.

3.   The student's performance will be evaluated on the basis of his faithfulness, preparation, presentation, and general attitude.

SELECTING A MINISTRY

1.   The student should select a ministry according to his gifts, talents and interests: musical ability, teaching, preaching, evangelism, crafts, puppets, hospitality, etc.

2.   Various types of ministries are available within local churches or as sponsored by the College: children's Bible clubs, open-air evangelism, rest home ministry, jail ministry, hospital ministry, pulpit supply, teaching, music, etc. All ministries are subject to the approval of the Practical Ministries Director.

3.   If the student has an idea for a ministry, he should share it with the Practical Ministries Director.

GUIDELINES FOR INVOLVEMENT

1.   Participation -- Students are expected to be involved in a practical ministry on a weekly basis.  The student is responsible to follow through on his commitments to ministry.  If he must miss for any reason, he should notify the Practical Ministries Director or his local church leader.

2.   Transportation to and from ministries is the responsibility of the student. Each student is expected to share the cost of travel.

3.   Academic or disciplinary probation does not absolve one of his responsibilities in practical ministries. However, the Practical Ministries Director reserves the right to regulate the type of ministry and the amount of time involved.

4.   Dress for Practical Ministries -- Neatness in grooming and dress is expected on all practical ministries assignments.  Appropriate dress will vary widely because of the variety of types of assignments. The Director will provide guidelines when necessary.

5.   The Practical Ministries Director is available to assist students through encouragement and advice. If a problem arises with an individual or an agency, the student should notify the Director immediately.

SUPERVISION AND EVALUATION

The Practical Ministries Director, other faculty members, participating pastors, and church leaders will observe, evaluate, and counsel with each student as a means of assisting the student in his ministry.
